One of the rarest of the modern Ducati collectibles is the MHe 900 Mike Hailwood tribute. Brainchild of Pierre Terblanche, the concept sketch was first shown to the public during the 1998 Munich Intermot Motorcycle Show. Received with rave reviews, Ducati next posted a questionnaire on their website to test the true interest of the MH900e. Within minutes more than 300 Ducatisti responded positively, so with this information, Federico Minoli and Massimo Bordi (General Manager of Ducati) decided to take the risk and produce a limited run of two thousand hand-built bikes. The first one thousand bikes would be produced in 2000 and the second thousand would be produced in 2001.

However, before any production bike, first Terblanche had to build the prototype, and that is the bike offered here for sale. This particular bike was used by Ducati’s Experience Department to control all assemblies methods, parts and components, to ensure everything fitted and operated properly before production started. Many components are “one-off” pre-production pieces, such as the battery mount cradle and front fairing mount frame, both changed on the production model but all retained on the prototype, as is top fork clamp that is raw cast aluminium rather than polished like the production version.

On the fuel tank there are signatures and dates noting various stages of testing and different phases of assembly, giving fabulous authenticity for this truly one-off motorcycle.
