The VR 1000 was the first pure racing bike Harley ever built. Every other Harley racer, from 1915 through 1993, had been a modified production bikes. The VR was purpose-built racer designed specifically for the AMA Championship.
The VR shared nothing in common with previous designs, nor did not share a single part with an existing Harley. To develop the cutting edge machine, H-D had to enlist the aid of outside firms to develop and produce components – or poach clever engineers from those firms to do the work in-house. The engine was developed by Roush, the suspension by Penske, the brakes by Wilwood – the machine was to be an all-American star-spangled superbike.
Only 50 road-going VR’s were ever built to meet AMA homologation requirements, but of those 50 only 2 were ever complied with a US Title, thus allowing them to be road registered. This is one of those two and although it has a clear Title, it has never been registered and has only 153mls on the odometer. Started regularly but absolutely show-room original condition and presently stored on display in Connecticut USA.
