1988 851 Tricolore

Offers welcome

 Product Description

1988 851 Tricolore Project

The bike that saved Ducati from the brink of disaster and won for them their first of many World Superbike Championships. The Tricolore was Ducati’s first ever 4 valve Superbike and is genuinely the bike that led to today's latest evolution of the world’s most famous road going Superbikes.

Compared to any other twin on the market in 1987, the 851 Tricolore was ground-breaking. Ducati introduced many technological innovations with the 851, non-more so than an open-loop fully-mapped electronic fuel injection system. The Weber Marelli IAW system, originally developed for the Ferrari F40 sports car and for use in Formula One, incorporated a computer with an EPROM (electronically programmable read only memory - AKA chip). This contained a map of fuel and ignition requirements derived from dyno tests. Although the first 851 only produced a modest 102 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, this was considerably more than any other twin available in 1987. The 851 Tricolore is a must-have for any serious collector or Italian bike enthusiast.

This Tricolore on offer here was a restoration project that has never been completed, or never really started is more accurate, as the project never got much beyond removal of the simplest of items. As the photos indicate, all of the critical Tricolore parts have not bee lost, like the uber rare mirror & blinker assembly which are completely different to Paso variants, the equally rare 17 inch two-piece Marvic rims usually only found on the 851 kit.

The bike is sold with a letter of authorisation from Ducati Motor Holdings, confirming the VIN and engine numbers correct and matching to archive records for a 1988 fourth series 851 Superbike. Located in NSW, the bike and al parts are available for inspection.
