2004 Bimota V-Due NEW
In 1997 Bimota launched its V-Due 500, a two-stroke race replica that was promoted globally as being the closest thing to a road registered GP bike. Limited to an exclusive production run of only 500 bikes, the model was aimed squarely at the high-end enthusiast with a showroom ticket of 14,5k GBP in 2001.
Unfortunately, the story of the V-Due is well known; the technical difficulties which plagued the super hi-tech model also led to the first collapse of the tiny ‘David & Goliath’ company. In a bid to salvage the model, and the company, Bimota recalled the early bikes and some were fitted with a revised carburation system that made them far more user friendly, but still required a capable rider given the true and somewhat small GP type power-band. A V-Due is not for the faint-hearted, but rather suited to a rider that’s experienced with, or willing to experience, a 90’s GP 2-stroke machine. Many of those that took-up the carby option still whined about the ride-ability, but those capable of handling a beast said they were truly exhilarating, and the most exciting bike they’d ever thrown a leg over.
Today a V-Due is truly a collector’s piece, and this example is about as good as you will hope to find. Purchased brand new from Piero Caronni, the factory Engineer who salvaged the remaining V-Due stock after the 2003 bankruptcy, it is production number 340 placing it into the last batch of Evoluzione’s Caronni produced. Like all final bikes it has received not only the carburettor update, but the additional carby modifications to suit his revised exhaust system. Also unique to the last batch of bikes, this has the GP electronic console and red mirrors. Although commissioned and ridden around the block when first received in Australian, the bike is literally brand new.
The last recorded sale of a V-Due was late last year for $39kUSD plus shipping from South Africa (circa $65kAUD landed) This particular example has been part of a well-known private collection in Melbourne (Australia), and is provided with the original Italian papers, 2 original tool-sets, one in a black and one in a blue plastic Bimota bag, the original owners-manual, 2 original keys, and the original Bimota stand.
