1990 Ducati 851 SP2

 Product Description

Ducati 851/888 SP2

Ducati 851 SP2 – The first ever WSBK homologation road racer!

The Ducati 851 SP2 is the homologation bike built by Ducati specifically to qualify for the 1990 World Superbike series. With eight victories in the 1990 season, Raymond Roche won the first World Superbike Championship title for Ducati on one of these limited production builds. The following year Doug Polen repeated his victory on the 851 SP3, and as history has shown, Ducati would become the team to beat for the next 20 + years, and this is the bike that started it all.

Ducati built only 380 851 SP2’s and this is # 232. Delivered new in Japan it’s seen minimal use having only 1,052k’s on the clock it is hardly run-in. As the pics show the bike will need a full service and thorough detail having sat idle for well over 20 years. The bike was traded by its original owner and we didn’t hesitate securing it as they have become incredibly rare and seldom are they found in original condition. Unlike most, this still retains the OEM mufflers and brackets, simply impossible to find today. The only non-oem aspect are the wheels; the original owner fitted a set of Tecno-magnesium rims, something that are equally as rare as an SP2! The oem 3 spoke Brembo’s are common to all 90’s Ducati and are both inexpensive and easily found.

Do not get this famous model confused with a run of the mill 851. Although titled 851, the SP2 uses an 888cc engine with H-section Pankl con-rods, 300-watt alternator, and two injectors per cylinder. The SP2 has a close ration gearbox, high spec cams, larger 33mm & 29mm valves, and a 45mm Termignoni exhaust. Chassis improvements included an aluminium rear subframe, upside-down Öhlins front forks, Öhlins rear shock, and fully floating Brembo cast-iron front discs. Due to its high specification & build cost, a new SP2 cost circa 23kUSD in 1990, and today command prices of between 22 to 28k USD, and 14-18k GBP! Those prices exclude shipping & Duty!!
