1975 Ducati 900SS

The 1975 Ducati 900SS is considered the closest in true ‘essence’ to the famous 750 Imola race replica, otherwise known as the Ducati “Greenframe”. It alone retained the 750SS’s Imola fiberglass tank (albeit without the “fuel gauge”), the race-spec 40mm Dell’Orto carbs, Conti exhausts and centre-axle Marzocchi forks. As anyone who has ever ridden a Greenframe will attest, for all its strengths, the Greenframe had one distinct weakness, their Scarab front brakes. Acknowledging this flaw, the hand-built 1975SS’s benefitted from the far superior Brembo units; finally, Ducati had produced a race-bike that stopped!

Whereas 401 Greenframes were built in 1973/4, Ducati produced a meagre 246 examples of 1975 900SS, making them the smallest 900 Super Sport production in Ducati’s history; slightly less than half the number of the next least built, that being the 1977 900 Super Sport of which only 496 were built.

Arguably the most famous of all 1975 900SS’s is build number 69 (production ID was always referred to by the engine number up until late 70’s), the Phillip Blake bike. In 1975 Phillip Blake was a notable scribe for Australia’s number 1 bike magazine, Two Wheels. Phillip was also a weekend racer, and had sold his 750 GT round-case to place an order for one of the first delivered, 900SS factory racer’s. The entire story of Phillip and this fabulous bike was covered in a 5-page editorial in the 1983 edition of Italian Motorcycles (a copy of the magazine has been retained and is being sold with the actual bike).

After a somewhat gruelling life on track, then a decade or more of hibernation in Phillip’s garage, the bike underwent various restorations but was brought to its present spectacular condition by the current owner. Internationally renowned Ducati Bevel authority, Ian Falloon, spent two days examining this bike in order to prepare a report on this rare and spectacularly original investment.
